In addition to the above the proprietor has completed two years full time study in the conservation and repair of listed and historic buildings. As a result we are able to offer informed advice on the alteration and repair of listed buildings, grant applications and listed building consent. As part of our commitment to Continued Professional Development the proprietor has undertaken courses from SPAB (www.spab.org.uk), Bournemouth University Conservation Sciences Department (http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/conservation and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (www.rics.org.uk).

Reliability

Reliabilty is a key factor in the execution of any service. From the first contact to the completion date, it is an important aspect of the project. There are always aspects of a job which are beyond your control and schedules may not always be met. However, our philosophy is to stay in tight control of the things you are able to, allowing yourself the time to deal with the problems which inevitably arise when working on old buildings. Reliability extends beyond time factors and should include accuracy of costings. We pride ourselves in this area of our work.

Skill

Traditional skills, which are in such short supply, are taught within our company. Five-year apprenticeships in the traditional trades are considered to be the minimum requirement. The tried and tested method of passing skills on from craftsman to apprentice is hard to better. In our experience the modern qualifications on offer to most potential trainee tradesmen are not appropriate in the field of conservation. As a result both practical skills and theory are taught in-house. In the future we will be offering a programme of short courses in the diverse and rewarding field of carpentry to interested parties and homeowners.

Being a member of the Institute Of Carpenters we support the promotion and development of traditional skills, which are in such short supply. We consider five-year apprenticeships in the traditional trades to be the minimum requirement. The tried and tested method of passing skills on from craftsperson to apprentice is hard to improve. In our experience many of the modern qualifications on offer to most potential trainee tradespeople are not appropriate for the field of conservation.
